In Your Shop or Ours: How Air Power Can Service & Repair Your Tools & Equipment

If you’re in manufacturing, you know that keeping your tools and equipment running smoothly is the backbone of your business. Whether it’s a minor fix, preventive maintenance, or a full-blown breakdown, Air Power’s team is ready to handle it—either in their shop or at yours.

We’re going behind the scenes with Tyler (Service Department Leader), and Chris Hawkins (Field Service Technician). Read on to learn about their roles, the service process, tips for keeping your equipment in top shape, and how Air Power supports manufacturers big and small.

Meet the Air Power Service Team

Before we dive into the nuts and bolts, let’s meet the folks who make it happen.

Tyler: Service Department Leader

Tyler manages the main service hub in High Point and oversees departments across multiple locations. He’s the guy making sure everything gets fixed right, every time.

“If Air Power sells it, we’re gonna be the ones to repair it.”

Chris Hawkins: Field Service Technician

Chris is the boots-on-the-ground field tech, traveling to client sites for those emergency fixes and preventive maintenance. When you need help fast—or when equipment is just too big to haul—Chris is your man.

“My role is to show up on site at the customer’s facility and either perform preventive maintenance or it’s a breakdown situation we’re trying to fix, you know, and get them back up and running.”

Why Does Air Power Have a Service Department?

Let’s start with the basics: why does Air Power invest so much in service?

  • Repairs: They fix what customers have, from air tools to battery-powered tools.
  • Factory Authorized Technicians: Every tech has specialized training with the brands Air Power represents.
  • Brands Serviced: Ingersoll Rand, Graco, Binks, Cleco, Gema, Devilbiss, and more.

“If we sell it in the tool world, chances are we’re gonna repair it or at least be the first ones to look at it.”

Types of Service Offered

  • Factory-Authorized Service: Technicians attend factory training for diagnostics—sometimes two days, sometimes a full week. Expertise that means you get it right the first time.
  • Bench Repairs: Most repairs happen in High Point, but other locations have their specialized strengths.
  • Field Repairs: When equipment can’t be shipped or there’s an urgent need, Chris and the field tech team roll out.

Air Power Service Departments: Where to Find Them

Air Power has multiple service centers to cover your needs:

  • High Point, NC: The beating heart, handling almost anything Air Power sells.
  • New Freedom, PA
  • Salem, VA
  • Ft. Worth, TNX
  • Orlando, FL

Every branch does repairs, but High Point is the biggest and most versatile.

Field Technician Role: Service Where You Need It

Field technicians like Chris are key for on-site service. Their jobs break down like this:

  • Preventive Maintenance: Setting up contracts so your equipment gets regular checkups (quarterly, bi-annual, annual).
  • Breakdown Fixes: Rushing to urgent breakdowns that can’t wait.
  • Emergency Calls: If something’s critical, or if a part is too large to move easily, call in the field team.

“Basically, if it’s a critical, urgent situation or the part’s too big to just bring back. Yes, you guys are…those are two, I guess, of the biggest reasons why you’re gonna go down there.”

Backup Equipment: Why It’s Essential

Ideally, customers should have a backup piece of equipment to swap out during maintenance or repair. When one goes down, the backup goes in—and the broken unit heads to Air Power for repair.

  • Reality: Over 50% of the time, customers don’t have a backup. Sometimes it’s cost, sometimes it’s oversight—but having one makes maintenance smoother.

“Everyone’s got three hammers, you know? They’re inexpensive, but when it comes to a $10,000 piece of equipment, sometimes customers’ funds aren’t there to have two pieces.”

Preventive Maintenance: Keeping Production Moving

Preventive maintenance is about keeping your production line running, not waiting for the next breakdown. Air Power offers:

  • Routine Service: Contracts are unique to each customer’s needs—no cookie-cutter solutions.
  • Backup Spare Parts: Having spares makes preventive maintenance easier.
  • Rotation System: New equipment goes in, old gets serviced and rebuilt, keeping a healthy rotation.

Challenges with Preventive Maintenance

Not everyone has backup equipment—especially for pricey fluid systems. In those cases, Air Power’s field technicians step in for emergency fixes, even if it’s just a temporary “band-aid” until a bigger solution is possible.

Service Contracts: Flexible, Custom Solutions

Air Power’s service contracts offer flexibility and peace of mind. They cover:

  • Routine Maintenance: Lock in regular checkups and repairs.
  • Fixed Pricing: Negotiate rates, so you aren’t surprised by repair bills.
  • Emergency Services: Contracts can include emergency callouts—but if it’s outside the agreed maintenance, there could be extra costs.

“When you have a service contract, that all is outlined there. Like what’s expected. And it’s not an open-ended service contract—it’s specific to what you’re writing the contract for.”

Setting Up a Service Contract

Getting a service contract is straightforward:

  1. Contact Air Power’s Account Manager.
  2. Share Details: Pictures and equipment model numbers help.
  3. Site Visit (if needed): For complex systems, Air Power visits to understand your needs.
  4. Customization: Contracts are built around liability, cost, and responsibility—no two are alike.

“We’ll talk through it, sit down with the customer and just ask them, ‘what do you want out of this service contract?’”

Blanket PO: Easier Billing & Add-ons

A blanket purchase order (PO) makes repair billing easier. If the repair cost is below 50% of the initial quote, Air Power just goes ahead and fixes it — no need to restart paperwork for every little fix.

  • If above 50%, you’ll get notified and can authorize the job.
  • If you’re not buying from Air Power yet, just call 1-800-334-1001 and press 2 for Service.

“Blanket POs are great. If the cost of the repair is below 50%, we can usually move forward with the repair. It’s like, automatically go ahead and repair it.”

Calibration: Staying Within Spec

Calibration is another piece of preventive maintenance—especially for torque tools.

  • Standards: Some customers need tools calibrated to specific standards (like 80 Newton meters).
  • Testing: Air Power has calibration tools tested annually to ensure accuracy.
  • Critical Torques: Any time a tool’s torque output drifts, send it in to get recalibrated.

Warranty Repairs: Factory-Authorized Service You Can Trust

All Air Power service locations are factory-authorized warranty centers for brands like Ingersoll Rand, Gema, Graco, Binx, and more.

  • If your equipment is under warranty, Air Power takes care of it and works directly with the manufacturer.

Emergency Repairs: Ready When Disaster Strikes

Both bench and field services handle emergency repairs. Recent supply chain hiccups (parts shortages, shipping delays) have made emergency repairs tougher—but Air Power is managing through it.

  • Diagnosis: Equipment is checked and diagnosed.
  • Waiting On Parts: Sometimes parts delays mean tools and equipment rack up, waiting on that one replacement.

“At the time, I think there were over 800 tools back there. As of yesterday, I think we were down to around 400 and some. So we’re looking pretty good.”

Field Projects: Typical On-Site Jobs

Field service covers a range of projects. Here’s what’s most common:

Breathing Air Applications

  • Bollard Air Systems: Yearly air quality testing, monthly calibrations, and filter swaps.
  • Law Compliance: Mandatory inspections to ensure safety.

“If you didn’t know on the breathable air that the. From the air source to the operator has to maintain the exact same manufacturers equipment all the way out, hose fittings, everything. Because there have been unfortunate situations where somebody grabbed something else and plugged it in and it ended up being from a tank that had other chemistry in it. Yes. That killed them quickly. So you got to be careful. So this is really important.”

Sensor Replacements & Installations

From breathing air monitors to warning systems (horns inside paint booths), Air Power can fix or upgrade your monitoring equipment.

Maintenance Contracts & Pump Room Upkeep

  • Pump Room Maintenance: Changing filters, pump swaps and maintenance for paint systems—especially 2K (two-component) paint systems.
  • Filter Changes: Paint booth filter changes are sometimes included, depending on contract.

Emergency Breakdown Fixes & “Oops” Moments

Sometimes breakdowns just happen—like someone forgetting to flush a 2K proportioning system over the weekend.

  • Field repairs: Complete tear down, spare parts swaps, and fast fixes to get production back up.

Air Power’s Reach: Service Coverage

Air Power’s geography covers a big footprint:

  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
  • Virginia
  • Kentucky
  • Arkansas
  • Mississippi
  • Louisiana
  • Southeast U.S.

What Happens When Air Power Can’t Solve a Problem?

It’s rare, but sometimes Air Power won’t be able to support equipment they didn’t sell (like Harbor Freight or home hobbyist tools). Their focus is on industrial-grade, long-term use equipment.

“But we’ve been good at trying to find solutions for problems that we didn’t even sell. So when it doesn’t go right…we do not service anything from Harbor Freight. Nope, nope, nothing.”
